Overview
New Doha International Airport (NDIA) is a brand new international airport in Doha, capital of Qatar. NDIA was slated to replace the old Doha International Airport as Qatar's only international airport in 2009. It is being built 5 kilometers east of the current airport. NDIA was designed primarily to deal with the growing amounts of traffic at the airport. To the first end, the airport will be able to handle 24 million annual passengers at its opening, three times as many as the current airport capacity. Upon completion of expansion in the future phrase, it will be able to handle 50 million passengers. It is also expected to handle 320,000 aircraft movements a year, and 2 million tones of annual cargo. The check-in and retail areas are expected to be 12 times larger than at the current airport. Moving walkways will be installed to handle the traffic. It will have a 3-star transit hotel and one 5-star luxury hotel. A catering service will be provided, catering of 75,000 meals a day. The Terminal is made up of multiple components; Main Terminal in the central, Concourse A & B in the East and West wing, Concourse C - the elongated passenger waiting rooms, and Concourse D & E at the very tail.
My Work
The project of New Doha International Airport is enormous and hundreds of people have participated in the project. My specific involvement and participation can be broken down into two phases and in summary below:
CD Phase - Provided design options and developed plan, elevations, sections and details for the construction documents. There are numbers of areas that I have been focused on:
- Exterior Curtain Wall & Stair
- Interior Ceiling Details
- Remote Gate Lobby at Main Terminal Expansion
- Passengers Departure and Arrival Hall
CA Phase
Reviewed and responded to the design changes, RFIs, change orders and coordinated with engineers and contractors to provide resolutions to the specific conflicts or changes. I also reviewed and commented on shop drawings submitted by contractors.
